Gulbarga
By Our Special Correspondent
Members of the Students Federation of India protesting outside the Deputy Commissioner's office in Gulbarga on Thursday.
GULBARGA, JULY 29. Students' organisations in the district continued to mount pressure on the State Government to find a permanent and early solution to the uncertainty over admissions to professional colleges. The Students Federation of India (SFI) organised a college boycott and held a protest rally in the city today to highlight the trauma of the economically backward and meritorious students aspiring to take up professional courses. In a memorandum addressed to the Chief Minister, N. Dharam Singh, and submitted to the Deputy Commissioner, Anjum Parvez, the SFI convener, Sunil M. Manpade, and the joint secretary, B. Sandeep, said that the State Government should pressure the Union Government to bring in legislation restoring fee concessions and giving the upper hand in admissions to professional colleges to the Government. They also wanted the Government to subsidise professional education by paying 30 per cent of the fees for medical, dental and engineering courses. The SFI also condemned the decision of the Government to reduce the allocation for higher education from 17 per cent to 13 per cent, and demanded that the Government restore the status quo. They also wanted the Government to take immediate measures to release the pending salary of college teachers. The memorandum urged the Government to immediately fill the vacant posts in colleges and improve infrastructure facilities and provide basic amenities to the students.
