Magesh shares second spot

BIEL, JULY 29. International Master P. Magesh Chandran defeated ninth seed Michael Roiz to reach 6.5 points after nine rounds of the Biel Masters chess tournament here on Wednesday.

The victory earned Magesh a clash with the top seed Mikhail Kobalia. The former National junior champion, now studying in the U.S., is in the joint-second place. Boris Avrukh, Alexander Rustemov, Christian Bauer and Andrey Shariyazdanov share the lead with seven points each.

Parimarjan Negi (5) declined a draw offer from Bragi Thorfinnsson and sacrificed a pawn before losing his way. Negi now faces compatriot P. Konguvel, who defeated Kolly Jacques. R. R. Vasudevan (4) drew with Nicolas Curien.

It's Morozevich again

The 40-move victory with black pieces in French Rubinstein took Morozevich's tally to seven points. The defeat of Pelletier along with K. Sasikiran's 16-move draw in Slav Defence with French Etienne Bacrot made sure of the second place to the Indian Grandmaster. Sasikiran has 5.5 points and is 1.5 points clear of third placed Ruslan Ponomariov.

In the other match of the day, Ponomariov recovered from two successive defeats to draw in 53 moves of Grunfeld Defence with Englishman Luke McShane.
