Tiruchi
By Our Staff Reporter
TIRUCHI, JULY 29. The Tiruchi Corporation Council today condoled the death of 94 students in the recent Kumbakonam school fire. Speaking at a special meeting, councillors cutting across political lines expressed their grief over the incident and conveyed their sympathies to the bereaved families. The All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam and Bharatiya Janata Party members offered to contribute their sitting fee for a month to the Chief Minister's Relief Fund. Members of the Congress party also offered their contributions through the Mayor, Sarubala R. Tondaiman. Mrs. Tondaiman, while expressing her condolences, called upon the Corporation officials to learn lessons from the tragedy and ensure that fire safety norms were adhered to in all educational institutions. She urged the officials to make sure that thatched roofs were removed and that educational institutions had fire extinguishers and proper exits. No institution should be allowed to function without proper licences. The exercise must be free from any political interference, she said. Later, the council observed two minutes' silence to pay homage to the victims.
