HYDERABAD, JULY 29. Is Osmansagar lake dying ? Yes. That is what the Congress MLA, P. Janardhan Reddy, feels and said in as many words in the Assembly on Thursday. " It is throttled and shrinking in size," he said, adding that its banks were encroached, structures allowed in its catchemt "at the instance of officials" and the water contaminated by all types of wastes. The Minister for Municipal Administration, K. Ranga Rao, agreed that encroachments and structures obstructed the inflows from the catchment. As many 19 engineering colleges and one medical college came up in the catchment area spread over 84 villages in Ranga Reddy district, 12 of them under HUDA control and 36 under the Airport Authority and 36 more under different gram panchayats.
Probe sought
Mr Reddy demanded a House Committee probe and a Task Force for saving the lake. The Minister said a meeting was convened on the lakes and tanks recently by the Chief Minister following which, the EPTRI was asked to undertake a study and submit a report. Action would follow.
