Monsoon active in Shimoga district

By Our Special Correspondent

SHIMOGA, JULY 30. The district has been receiving good rainfall in the last few days because of which the water level in tanks and reservoirs has been rising steadily.

The water level in the Linganamakki Reservoir on Friday stood at 1,783.60 feet as against the full reservoir level of 1,819 feet. The level this day last year was 1,779 feet. The inflow into the reservoir was 19,901 cusecs while the outflow was 1,701 cusecs.

The catchment area of the Linganamakki Reservoir received 37.2 mm rainfall in the last 24 hours.

The water level in the Bhdara Reservoir stood at 146 ft on Friday as against the maximum level of 186 ft. The reservoir recorded an inflow of 9,536 cusecs.

The highest rainfall in the last 24 hours was 43.4 mm recorded in Tirthahalli taluk while 5.2 mm. was the lowest rainfall, recorded in Shimoga taluk.

Sowing picks up

Farmers have completed sowing in 1,16,429 hectares of land till July 29 as against the target of 1,80,904 hectares. Sowing is expected to be taken up in more areas as more rain is expected in the coming days.

The taluk-wise break-up of the area sown under kharif crop (figures in brackets indicate the target): Shimoga 18,904 hectares (30,130 ha.), Bhadravati 10,318 ha. (23,360 ha.), Tirthahalli 1,335 ha. (15,000 ha.), Sagar 13,441 ha. (18,000 ha.), Hosnagar 5,078 ha. (13,200 ha.), and Shikaripur 33,336 ha. (43,410 ha.).

The area covered under kharif crops in the Malnad taluks of Tirthahalli and Hosnagar is lower than the projected target because of lack of rainfall.

But the coverage of the kharif crop in Shikaripur, Sorab, and Sagar is satisfactory because dry crops such as maize, pulses, and cotton is grown here. Sorab is ahead of other taluks in the district as far as the coverage of the kharif crop is concerned.

The area covered under different kharif crops in the district is: maize (62,179 hectares), paddy (37,759 hectares), cotton (7,008 hectares), sugarcane (6,137 hectares), and groundnut (1,187 hectares).

The district appears to have received more than its share of expected rainfall going by the figures. While the district is expected to receive 1,468 mm from January 1 to July 29, the rainfall received during this period this year is 1,697 mm. Similarly, the normal average rainfall for the taluks for this period is 209 mm but the actual rainfall received is 242 mm.
