THRISSUR, JULY 30. The Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI) has urged the Government to halt the admission to self-financing professional colleges in the State till the anomalies in their fee structure are solved. Addressing a press conference here today, the DYFI State secretary, A. Pradeep Kumar, described the Supreme Court verdict on admission to self-financing colleges and fee structure as "unfortunate and unjust''. "By not pressing for the inclusion of the Kerala Self-Financing Professional Colleges (Prohibition of Capitation Fees and Procedure for Admission and Fixation of Fees) Act in the Ninth Schedule of the Constitution, the State Government had created a situation suitable for eliciting the current verdict. This shows the unholy nexus between the education mafia and the Government,'' Mr. Kumar alleged. He said the common man could not afford the fees fixed by the K.T. Thomas Committee (Rs.1.13 lakhs for medical seats and Rs.38,700 for engineering seats a year). Students whose counselling for medical courses was over would now have to pay higher fees. If the State Government did not rectify the anomalies in the Act and take measures to get it included in the Ninth Schedule immediately, the DYFI would intensify its agitation, Mr. Kumar said.
