By Our Principal Correspondent
COLOMBO, JULY 30. Rahul Dravid said that the close victory (by four runs) against Sri Lanka in the Super League was the best thing to have happened to India ahead of Sunday's final against the host in the Indian Oil-Asia Cup 2004. Speaking to the media after practice at the Sinhalese Sports Club on Friday, the Indian vice-captain said, "Close games are great if you finish on the right side of the result. Tuesday's win was fantastic. It has done wonders to the side's morale and confidence". "The positive aspect of the last match was that the side didn't give up till the end. We held on even when Sanath (Jayasuriya) and Dilshan took their team to well within striking distance of the target." Describing Sri Lanka as formidable at home, the star batsman said, "It's a good challenge for us. It's a one-off contest now, and whichever team fires at the right time will win." "We are preparing well. Every member is available for selection. Laxman is recovering nicely from his knee injury. He still has 48 hours." The Karnataka cricketer said he was happy with his form and hopes to perform well in the final.
Pathan all fired up
India's star speedster, Irfan Pathan, is also gearing up for the big game. "We still have two full days." Talking about bowling under lights, the left-armer said, "It's not any easier than bowling in the afternoon. The idea is to put the ball in the right areas. Doesn't matter if it's morning, noon or night." The Baroda cricketer felt that the wickets provided here were better than the ones he bowled on in Pakistan. "Except that we were bowling on a different wicket in every match. In the end, though, it is about adjusting your length." Pathan said the team would draw up plans for Lankan star Sanath Jayasuriya. "Not as yet. We will though." Pathan has the promise to develop into a fine all-rounder. "I'm focussing on my bowling now. My batting will develop along the way."
