Mayors' conference

CHENNAI JULY 30. The Central Government will hold a conference of Mayors and Commissioners of Municipal Corporations on September 4 to discuss problems in execution of projects aimed at producing electricity from municipal waste.

Stating this at a press conference here, Vilas Muttemwar, Union Minister of State for Non-conventional Energy Sources, said the Centre was aware of "operational problems" in implementation of such projects.

To create greater awareness, the Centre would observe the birth anniversary of the former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi as the Renewable Energy Day. It appealed to the State Governments to organise rallies and competitions for students.

The Minister said the Reliance group had decided to install windmills for 500 megawatt in Maharashtra, Gujarat and Rajasthan.

LKG student run over

CUDDALORE July 30. A three-and-half-year-old girl was run over by her school van in front of her house at Sri Mushnam near here yesterday. The incident occurred when V. Jayshree was alighting from the van. She was studying in LKG in a nursery school.

It is learnt that the vehicle moved even before Jayshree got down. She sustained bleeding injuries in the head and died on the way to hospital.

The police have arrested the driver.

Engineering college burgled

TIRUCHI JULY 30. Masked burglars struck at a private engineering college near Inamkulathur in the district and decamped with money after tying up six watchmen in the early hours today.

The Superintendent of Police, P. Tamarai Kannan, said the management reported a loss of Rs. 17,000. The watchmen were admitted to the K.A.P. Viswanatham Government Medical College Hospital.

Maize at subsidised price

NAMAKKAL JULY 30. The National Egg Coordination Committee (NECC), Namakkal zone, would help small poultry unit owners to get maize, an important ingredient in poultry feed preparation, at a subsidised price to tide over the price rise. The zone chairman, P. Selvaraj, said in a press release here today that to tide over the artificial price rise caused by "unscrupulous middlemen,'' the NECC had made arrangements to supply maize at 50 paise per kg less than the market price for small poultry unit owners.

Small poultry farmers having less than 20,000 layers or 25,000 broilers could contact the zone for availing themselves of the benefit, Dr. Selvaraj said.

Produced before court

PERAMBALUR JULY 30. The leader of the banned Tamizhar Viduthalai Iyakkam, Suba. Ilavarasan, was produced in the Perambalur court today in connection with a case of attempt to hurl explosive materials on a police party at Thuraimangalam in August 1997.

The District and Sessions Judge, N. Retnaraj, posted the hearing to August 12.

Remand extended

Thanjavur July 30. Five of the accused in the July 16 Kumbakonam school fire accident were today remanded to custody till August 13 by Kingsley Christopher,the Judicial Magistrate-11, Kumbakonam.

Those produced were the correspondent of the Sri Krishna School, Pulavar Palanisamy, the secretary, Saraswathi, the Headmistress, Shanthalakshmi, the noon-meal employees, Vijayalakshmi and Vasanthi.

Demonstrations planned

CHENNAI JULY 30. Puthiya Tamizhagam will organise "rallies and protest demonstrations" throughout the State on August 4 to condemn the attack on party president K. Krishnasamy at Tirunelveli on July 26.

The party general secretary, Durai Arasan, told newsmen here today that the demonstrations would be held in all district headquarters. The State and district-level functionaries would participate.

Mr. Arasan alleged that the attack was aimed at eliminating Dr. Krishnasamy as he had been working for the uplift of the downtrodden. "Some vested elements which could not tolerate tried to kill him."

He said nine persons, arrested by the police in this connection, were only mercenaries and the party wanted to nab those who were behind the attack. The party would seek police protection to its leader.

Open university examinations

CHENNAI JULY 30. The first semester/term-end examination for students of MBA and all postgraduate diplomas of the Tamil Nadu Open University is scheduled to be held on July 31, August 1, 7, and 8.

The BPP and MPP examinations are also scheduled on July 31 and August 1 for non-formal students of various undergraduate and postgraduate programmes. The examinations are conducted for students enrolled for the academic year 2003-04 only (first batch of TNOU). About 7,884 students are expected to appear for the examinations, which are to be held at 34 centres in affiliated and polytechnic colleges in Tamil Nadu.

The counselling for the UG/PG programmes for the academic year 2003-04 is scheduled to be held on August 7, 8, 21, 22, 28 and 29. The student identity cards for calendar year 2004 alongwith welcome letters are under despatch.

Students who have passed Plus-11 through instant special examinations conducted by the Directorate of Higher Secondary Education, Tamil Nadu Government, can enroll themselves for degree, diploma and certificate programmes through TNOU in the academic year admission, the last date for which is extended up to August 31, says a press release from N. Sethuraman, Controller of Examination of TNOU.

Youth murdered

TIRUNELVELI JULY 30 . A youth was murdered at Palayamkottai on Thursday night by an unidentified group.

The police said MGR alias Visuwasam, 34, of Pottal near here, was attacked by a group when he was standing near a teashop. He sustained deep cut injuries on the neck and died on the spot.

He was involved in two cases of murder.

Taken ill

TIRUNELVELI JULY 30 . Twenty-one boys were admitted to a private hospital here on Thursday, for suspected "food poisoning".

Sources said the boys, aged 7-10, had symptoms of diarrhoea after having lunch in their hostel, being run by a private party at Tharuvai. They were rushed to a private hospital, where their condition was said to be stable.

House burgled

Nagercoil July 30. The house of an ex-service man was burgled at Punnai Nagar near here on Friday.

According to the police, Rani, wife of David, who was working abroad, went to a private hospital to admit her daughter for delivery when some unidentified persons entered her house through the front portion and decamped with 90 sovereigns of gold ornaments worth Rs.3.60 lakhs.

Library planned

TIRUNELVELI JULY 30. The Tirunelveli District Small and Tiny Industries Association has decided to set up a library to help entrepreneurs running small-scale industries.

The decision was taken at a meeting of the general council held recently.

The meeting urged the Government to merge provident fund, ESI and labour welfare schemes to introduce a single labour welfare law. The subsidies, withdrawn by the Government, should be reintroduced to save the small and tiny industries, it said.

Dies of burns

Dharmapuri July 30. A 35-year-old woman died of burns at Bommidi here on Thursday. The police said that Lakshmi, wife of Shanmugam, was cooking when her sari caught fire. Arrested

Krishnagiri July 30. As many as nine stolen bikes were recovered following the arrest of a person at Kaveripattinam here on Thursday. During a vehicle check at Palacode junction, Senthil (27), speeding on a two-wheeler, was stopped and during interrogation it was found that he was a vehicle-lifter.

Commits suicide

PERAMBALUR JULY 30. A 19-year-old girl of Melapazhuvur near Ariyalur committed suicide at her residence on Thursday.

C. Prema set herself ablaze, unable to bear an acute stomach pain, the police said.

She was rushed to the Thanjavur Medical College Hospital, where she died.

The Melapazhuvur police have registered a case.

Illicit arrack destroyed

PUDUKOTTAI JULY 30 . In surprise raids conducted in different places in the district the last three days, the police arrested 63 persons, including 13 women, and destroyed illicit arrack and fermented wash worth Rs. 2.5 lakh.

An official release here said the raids were conducted at Vadagadu, Karmabakudi, Alangudi and Keeramangalam. The police destroyed 5,160 litres of illicit arrack and 5,085 litres of fermented wash.

A moped and a cycle used for smuggling illicit liquor were also seized.

The Superintendent of Police, R. Arumugam, has warned of severe action against those indulging in such offences.

Plea to expedite work

KARUR JULY 30 . The Karur MP, K.C. Palanisamy, has impressed upon the Railway Minister, Laloo Prasad, the need for allocating more funds to complete the Karur-Salem broad gauge line. At a meeting, Mr. Palanisamy urged the Minister to expedite the work proceeding at a snail's pace.

Mr. Laloo Prasad assured him that after utilisation of the funds allotted for this year, further amount could be sanctioned, according to a press release.

Mettur level

TIRUCHI JULY 30. The level in the Mettur dam stood at 72.30 feet today.

The inflow was 8,173 cusecs, and the discharge 7,781 cusecs.
