No amendment to Zamindari Act

LUCKNOW, JULY 30. Succumbing to pressure from supporting party legislators and ministers, the Uttar Pradesh Government today clarified no amendment would be made in the controversial clauses of the Zamindari Act to be brought in the Assembly next week.

State Revenue Minister Ambika Choudhury told reporters here, that there was no question of change in the clause on the sale of land by the Schedule Castes or government land occupied by them.

However, he said the state government was committed to bringing a bill in the Assembly which would provide more benefits to the Dalits.

Earlier, about 27 MLAs of the ruling Samajwadi Party and some ministers had opposed the government's decision to amend the existing law that prevents Dalits from selling land to other castes.

Other controversial amendments highlighted were refusal of registration of government land forcefully occupied by the Dalits. Mr Choudhury announced that a Government Order had also been issued in which all district authorities had been directed to give land rights to Dalits within three months. ``Strict action would be taken if the district authorities failed to comply with the orders,'' he said. -- UNI
