BANGALORE, JULY 31. The Deputy Leader of the BJP, Govind Karjol, demanded in the Legislative Assembly on Friday that the Government fill 25,000 backlog posts in the various departments. Speaking on the Budget, Mr. Karjol said the previous Congress Government had filled only 6,000 backlog posts. The Government should issue a common notification to fill the backlog posts before April next, he said. Referring to the power situation, he said Karnataka Power Transmission Corporation Limited (KPTCL) officials were responsible for nearly 80 per cent of power theft. The State was losing Rs. 2,200 crores a year because of theft of electricity. The transmission and distribution losses were estimated at 25 million units a day, he charged.
Neglected
The senior BJP member, Jagadish Shettar, criticised the Government for its lack of commitment in developing North Karnataka. There was no allocation of funds for the completion of the Kalasa-Bandori Nullah Project to ensure drinking water to Hubli-Dharwad, railway gauge conversion work between Bijapur and Gadag , laying of a new line between Hubli and Ankola, revival of loss-making cooperative banks and improvement of the Karnataka Institute of Medical Sciences (KIMS), Hubli, he said.
Conversion
N. Yogish Bhat (BJP) urged the Deputy Chief Minister, Siddaramaiah, to set aside Rs. 60 crores in the Budget to complete the gauge conversion work between Mangalore and Bangalore. Train facility between the two cities would reduce road traffic and help boost tourism in the coastal districts. He requested the Government to release Rs. 12 crores for upgrading the Bajpe airport in Mangalore. The Centre had agreed to release Rs. 100 crores for land acquisition. He also urged the Government to sign a memorandum of understanding with the Centre for setting up a Special Economic Zone in Dakshina Kannada.
Funds
C.T. Ravi, Araga Jnanendra and Surya Narayana Reddy (all BJP), spoke on the Budget and demanded that more funds be allocated for Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe Corporation. They also wanted reduction in sales tax on information technology goods and coconut oil.
