`Popularise Adi Dravidar schemes'

VELLORE, JULY 31. The need to popularise schemes implemented by the Tamil Nadu Adi Dravidar Housing and Development Corporation (TAHDCO) for the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes was stressed at a seminar on `Economic Development Schemes for Adi Dravidars and Tribal Welfare' organised by the TAHDCO here.

Presiding, the Vellore Collector, S. Gopalakrishnan, said Rs.2.40 crores was fixed by the TAHDCO for grant of loan-cum-subsidy to the beneficiaries in the district this year. Of this, the subsidy would be Rs.1.20 crores. There were several welfare schemes for the SC/STs, for which the TAHDCO provided 50 per cent subsidy. But there was very little awareness among the targeted sections of these schemes. He wanted block-wise and branch-wise campaigns be conducted by banks to popularise the schemes. Non-governmental organisations too lend a helping hand in the task, he said.
