IMPHAL, JULY 31. Hundreds of people, braving a heavy downpour, thronged police stations today to court arrest demanding the withdrawal of the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act, 1958 and punishment for the Assam Rifles personnel allegedly involved in the rape and killing of Thangjam Manorama and a tribal pastor, Jamkholet Khongsai. Police later released them. A spokesperson of the 32 non-government organisations spearheading the agitation said the mass arrests would continue. Though the curfew was relaxed for 13 hours today in and around the State capital, Imphal, prohibitory orders under Section 144 Cr. P.C. are still in force.
