Farmer commits suicide

LUCKNOW, JULY 31. In the first incident of its kind in Uttar Pradesh, a farmer committed suicide because of his inability to pay off a loan taken to buy a tractor.

Six senior officials, including the District Magistrate of Barabanki, where the incident took place, have been suspended following the incident.

Earlier this week, Mansaram of Maricha Ishwari Singh village committed suicide by hanging himself from a tree. The farmer found too much the humiliation suffered by his father for his inability to repay a loan he had taken for purchasing a tractor.

Reports said that Mansaram's father, Kallu, along with two others — Bansilal and Mangal — had obtained a joint loan of Rs. 3.40 lakhs from the Uttar Pradesh Land Development Bank — Rs 1.1 lakh was sanctioned for Kallu, Rs. 2 lakhs for Bansilal and the rest in the name of Mangal.

As Kallu could not pay off the loan in February, the bank issued a recovery certificate against him. Officials of the Revenue Department auctioned the tractor and the agricultural land of Kallu for the recovery of Rs. 66,000. Of this, Rs. 53,000 was taken by the bank and the rest adjusted against the recovery expenditure. In two years, the actual amount payable by Kallu had gone up to Rs. 1.68 lakhs.

Kallu has lost his tractor as also the small piece of land he owned and also his son, the only earning member of the family. An inquiry has been ordered into the incident.
