AHMEDABAD, JULY 31. The Gujarat Chief Minister, Narendra Modi, and seven senior bureaucrats and police officials, accused of compliance in the killing of two British nationals during the 2002 communal riots in the State, have been given time till August 16 to file their replies in court. The Himmatnagar Civil Court Judge, M.M. Kayastha, gave the ruling when the case for adequate compensation to the family members of the deceased British nationals came up for hearing today. Two British nationals, who hailed from Gujarat, were killed near Prantij in Sabarkantha district in a mob attack, when they were on a visit to their hometown. Six other accused in the case, charged with the attack on the two, disputed the civil court's jurisdiction in hearing the case pointing out that since they were British nationals any case for compensation should be filed in the concerned British court. They also declined to file replies on the ground that their defence would be exposed in case the complainant filed a criminal case against them. The court asked the advocate of the complainants, the family members of the British nationals, to file their replies to the plea of the accused by September 4.
