BANGALORE, JULY 31. Susheel Narahari Borkar took over as the Director-General and Inspector-General of Police today from M.D. Singh, who has retired. Mr. Borkar will hold office till May 31, 2005. A former officer of the Indian Army, Mr. Borkar served in the Kumaon Regiment from 1967 to 1974. He joined the Indian Police Service on July 21, 1974. He began his police career as the Assistant Superintendent of Police, Ulsoor Gate Sub-division, Bangalore. Mr. Borkar said enforcement of law with emphasis on accountability of the police was one of his thrust areas. He said stress would be given to prevention and detection of crimes. Regarding naxalite activities, he said there would be deft handling of the law and order and socio-economic issues involved in the problem.
