Actor's death

condoled

TIRUPATI: Andhra Pradesh Praja Natya Mandali has expressed grief over the death of the film comedian, Allu Ramalingaiah. At a condolence meeting in the party office here on Saturday, the district secretary, C. Penchalaiah, recalled the bygone days of Allu as the Mandali's first generation artiste.

High Court CJ in Puttaparthi

ANANTAPUR: The Chief Justice of Andhra Pradesh High Court, Devinder Gupta, visited Puttaparthi, in the district on Saturday. Accompanied by his family members he had a darshan of Satya Saibaba in the evening.

Lok Adalat

NANDYAL: The Lok Adalat conducted under the chairmanship of the Third Additional District Judge, R. Ramachandra Reddy, at Nandyal on Saturday settled 19 cases, which included three civil cases, seven criminal and nine motor vehicle accident cases. The civil cases involved an amount of Rs. 2.5 lakhs while Rs. 5.9 lakhs was sanctioned as compensation in MV accident cases.

Council hall named after NTR

CHITTOOR: The Municipal Chairman, Chengal Raya Naidu, on Saturday inaugurated the Municipal Council meeting hall named after late N. T. Rama Rao, and constructed at a cost of Rs. 8.5 lakhs.

The District Collector S. S. Rawat, the Rajya Sabha member, Durgaram Krishna, the MLA, A. S. Manohar, the Municipal Commissioner, Umapathi, and the councillors were present on the occasion.

Maran calls on Naidu

HYDERABAD: The Union Minister for Communications and Information Technology, Dayanidhi Maran, called on Telugu Desam president, N.Chandrababu Naidu, at the latter's residence here on Saturday.

According to TDP sources, it was a courtesy call. The TDP leaders, Ummareddy Venkatewarulu, R.Chandrasekhara Reddy,K.Ramamohan Rao and P.Ramchandraiah, were also present.

Six farmers commit suicide

KARIMNAGAR: In separate incidents, five farmers have committed suicide in various parts of the district due to increasing debts following failure of crops. Reports reaching here said that a farmer, G. Rajireddy (35), committed suicide by consuming pesticide in Gudatipalli village of Husnabad mandal on Saturday. Another farmer, Narsaiah (58) of Narsaiahpalle village in Dharmapuri mandal committed suicide by catching hold of a live electric transformer on Saturday.

Another farmer, N. Peddalingam (40) committed suicide by hanging in Kathalapur mandal. K. Rajesham (28), a farmer from Pathagudur village in Velgatoor mandal committed suicide by consuming pesticide on Friday night. While, Chandra Reddy (60), of Kondapalkala village in Manakondur mandal, who had consumed pesticide on Wednesday died while undergoing treatment in a hospital on Saturday.

A 42-year-old farmer of Shankarapuram village in Dhachepalli mandal of Guntur district committed suicide by consuming pesticide in his house in the early hours on Saturday. Unable to bear the burden of debts, he took the extreme step, the family members said.

He owned 2 acres of land and had taken another three acres on lease to grow cotton and chillies. Lack of proper returns led to debts mounting to more than a lakh of rupees. Two daughters and a son were dependent on him, while he had got a daughter married, the Dachepalli police said.

Widow beaten to death

KURNOOL: A widow, M. Laxmamma, 40, was beaten to death by neighbours during a quarrel at Allur village under Uyyalawada police station limits in Kurnool district on Saturday.

According to reports, the woman intervened in a dispute between her sister and neighbours, which infuriated the neighbours. She fell unconscious and died. The police are investigating.

Award for orthopaedic surgeon

Kakinada: The Professor and Head of the Department of Orthopaedics in Rangaraya Medical College, C. Hanumantha Rao, has been presented `Systopic Excellence' award, which is considered to be the most prestigious for any orthopaedic surgeon. Dr. Rao is one of the three orthopaedic surgeons selected for the award in the South Zone.

He is also the recipient of several other awards. At a special function held to mark the commencement of the two-day Eighth Orthopaedic Update-2004 here on Saturday, P.K. Dave, former Director-General of All-India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi, presented the award to Dr. Rao.

IFFCO 100 per cent cooperative

HYDERABAD: The Indian Farmers Fertiliser Cooperative Limited (IFFCO) has become a 100 per cent cooperative with the repatriation of the remaining 12.5 per cent equity held by the Central Government, working out Rs. 52.93 crores, during this month.

The realisation of this mission, not so long ago, an impossible dream, was achieved by IFFCO in a short time, according to a press release.

The equity contribution of the Central Government was 70 per cent in 2001. This was brought down to 25 per cent by March 31 this year and within last four months the share of the Central Government has come down to nil.

Panels for non-renewable energy

Hyderabad: District advisory committees will come up shortly with Collector as chairperson and DRDA director as secretary to work as facilitators to popularise and encourage use of non-renewable energy among the people.

The Union Minister of State for Non-Conventional Energy Sources, Vilas Muttemwar, intimated this to the Revenue Minister, D. Prasada Rao, as he met the latter in the Secretariat today.

Members for the committees would be drawn from NGOs, entrepreneurs running renewable energy plants etc. Mr. Muttemwar said the committees would encourage renewable energy programmes in the district by taking steps for removal of barriers thwarting accelerated switchover to renewable energy and integrate these with other rural development schemes wherever possible.

The Union Minister sought State's cooperation to make successful, the rallies, human chains and competitions planned for August 20 all over the country with the involvement of school children to highlight the message of renewable energy, marking the birth anniversary of Rajiv Gandhi.

Farm workers' dharna

HYDERABAD: The Andhra Pradesh Agricultural Workers' Association which is affiliated to the Bharatiya Khet Mazdoor Union on Saturday called for staging of protests and dharna on August 9 at the mandal and districts centres demanding a long-term solution to the problems facing the agriculture sector.

J. Wilson, general secretary of the association, in a statement issued here demanded introduction of comprehensive legislation in the Lok Sabha during its forthcoming session commencing on August 16 on agricultural labour and steps by the government to protect the interests of the rural poor.
