Students demanding speedy admission to professional courses, in Salem on Saturday.
SALEM, JULY 31. Anguished parents and their children, victims of confusion and delay surrounding the admissions to professional courses, say "justice delayed is justice denied." These children and parents, hailing from Salem, Erode, Namakkal and Dharmapuri districts, said the agony caused by uncertainty haunted them. "We have become prisoners of a system that refuses to provide a clinching answer to a serious issue of career and life of our children," said one of the parents. More than the students, the parents are the worried lot. "My girl has secured very good marks for which she toiled for two full years. Now I do not know how to console her and keep her morale up." The girl looked distraught and pessimistic. So did look many other children. "My dreams of making it to Anna University are now hanging fire. An established system has been frayed and we do not know what will happen to our future," she wondered.
Plea to Kalam
These students sent hundreds of telegrams to the President, Abdul Kalam, appealing to him to come to their rescue and make the systems accountable for the delay. "An early judgement is what we need now. Further delay will affect our future," the telegram noted. "He loves us. We are optimistic that he will take necessary action," hoped another girl. "No doubt, most of the students who are affected by this confusion are good performers," said the career consultant, Jayaprakash A. Gandhi. He said the Government should start the admission procedures immediately. "Any fresh guideline, whether from the judiciary or any other body, could be taken up for the next academic year," he added.
