TIRUNELVELI, JULY 31. The Tamil Nadu Thouheed Jamaath today staged a demonstration here today, protesting the Chief Minister, Jayalalithaa's alleged remarks against the Andhra Pradesh Government's decision to give reservation to Muslims The protestors said Muslims, who were economically and educationally lagging behind, should be given reservation in employment opportunities in public sector undertakings and educational institutions. Speaking to presspersons earlier, the State vice-president of the TTJ, P. Jainul Abideen, said only two per cent of the Muslims was occupying Central and State Governments' jobs, including Indian Administrative and Indian Police services, though the Muslims accounted for 20 per cent of the total population. The TTJ wanted the restoration of the reservations, which was extended to the Muslims and other minority communities during the British regime. "After a prolonged battle, the present Union Government, in principle, has decided to give reservation to Muslims and following the footprints of the Kerala and Karnataka Governments, the Andhra Pradesh Government has now come forward to give reservation to us. But, the All India Anna Dravida Munntera Kazhagam, which promised reservation for the Muslims in its manifesto for the Lok Sabha elections, has now termed this move as "illegal," Mr. Abideen said.
