NAGAPATTINAM, JULY 31 . Bankers should encourage the women self-help groups to start business activities and should not deny them higher amount of loans for their business, the Collector, M. Veera Shanmugha Moni, said on Friday. He was inaugurating an orientation programme on the Swarna Jayanthi Gram Swarozgar Yojana (SGSY), organised by the District Rural Development Agency, and attended by a large number of government and bank officials. He appealed to the bankers to give loans to the SHGs according to the skills and abilities and by scrutinising their project reports. The Collector said Rs.4.82 crores was distributed as economic assistance and subsidy to the SHGs under the SGSY during 2003-2004. The bankers, he said, should have good knowledge of the rules of the SGSY. Mr. Veera Shanmugha Moni said 92.27 lakhs was given as economic assistance and subsidy to 62 SHGs during 2000-2001, Rs.1.87 crores to 95 SHGs in 2001-2002, Rs.12 lakhs to 11 groups in 2002-2003 and Rs.4.82 crores to 231 groups in 2003-2004. Besides, Rs. 86.3 lakhs was given to 863 SHGs as revolving fund last year and Rs.2.02 crores as subsidy to 231 groups. The Collector said the district administration provided training to 1,638 SHG members last year at a cost of Rs. 6 lakhs, and spent Rs.17.4 lakhs on infrastructure development and Rs.27 lakhs for forming the groups. S. Jayakumar, Project Officer, District Rural Development Agency, T. Santhanagopal, Assistant General Manager, State Bank of India, Mayiladuturai, and S. Vijayakumar, Lead District Manager, Indian Overseas Bank, attended the meeting.
