MYSORE, JULY 31. The Leader of the Opposition in the Legislative Assembly, B.S. Yediyurappa, has said that the inquiry by the Central Bureau of Investigation into the stamp paper racket should be brought under the supervision of the Supreme Court. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader urged the Chief Justice of India, R.C. Lahoti, to appoint two judges to oversee the inquiry. "Every moment is precious in this case because chances of losing vital records and documents are more if the arrests of important persons are delayed as laws are being twisted,'' he said. Asking why several top politicians in the State whose names have been connected to the scam were being let off, he said the CBI was only arresting officials. Many top police officials had helped the accused in the scam and action should be taken against them.
`Dark legislation'
Regarding the stalemate over admissions to professional courses and the legislation in this regard, Mr. Yediyurappa said the provisions of the law would affect the children belonging to the poor and middle-class families. Describing it as a "dark legislation", he said the coalition Government had gone back on its promise of protecting the interests of students. While the demand was to revert to the fee structure of 2002-2003, the Government had accepted that recommended by the A.B. Murgod committee. Mr. Yediyurappa said the legislation was not valid in view of a Supreme Court directive. He alleged that the Government was in league with the managements of private professional colleges.
