Robbers arrested

DAVANGERE JULY 31. An armed group assaulted four shepherds who were looking after a herd of sheep in a field in Nalkudre village on Friday night and made away with around 200 sheep.

The Superintendent of Police, Davangere district, Alok Kumar, said here today that one of the shepherds had sustained serious injuries in the attack. The robbers allegedly took away the sheep in a mini truck. The Davangere Police arrested the robbers, seized two vehicles from them and recovered the sheep.

Suicide attempt

DAVANGERE JULY 31. A labourer reportedly tried to commit suicide in front of the office of the Superintendent of Police here today. The Superintendent of Police, Davangere district, Alok Kumar, said that Siddalingappa, who had taken a loan from a private moneylender, was being pressured to repay the loan. The police said that he had consumed poison. He was immediately shifted to the General Hospital. The police have arrested Pradeep, the financier who gave Siddalingappa Rs. 7,000 on a monthly interest rate of 7 per cent.

Two dead

CHITRADURGA JULY 31. Two motorcyclists were killed on the spot when a speeding lorry rammed their motorcycle at Hiriyur on Saturday afternoon.

The dead were identified as Srinivas Shetty (21) and Mastad (19) of Adivala village.

According to the police, they were coming to Hiriyur from Adivala when a lorry tried to overtake them. But the lorry driver lost control of the vehicle and rammed the motorcycle.

The police have registered the case.

Ban orders

HUBLI JULY 31. Prohibitory orders under Section 144 have been clamped till August 6 at Samshi village in Dharwad district after some persons allegedly damaged a signboard of the Bajrang Dal.

The police said prohibitory orders were promulgated as a precautionary measure. — UNI

Award

MADIKERI JULY 31. S.K. Rangaswamy of Shirangala village in Somwarpet taluk has been chosen for the State Handloom Weaver's Award for 2002-03, according to an official release issued here on Saturday.

The release said Mr. Rangaswamy had woven a bed-sheet using a new weaving machine installed at the handloom weaving unit in Shirangala. It had been sent to the office of the Textile Development Commissioner in Bangalore. The selection committee for the award, which appreciated the design of the bed-sheet, had chosen Mr. Rangaswamy for the award, the release added.

Elected

MANGALORE JULY 31. Y. Ramesh Shenoy, dental surgeon from Karkala and a member of the Indian Dental Association (IDA), has been elected vice-president of the IDA (Head Office) for 2004-05, according to a press release.

Deficient rainfall in 8 districts

BANGALORE JULY 31. Rainfall was deficient in eight districts of the State between July 23 and 29. The districts are Bangalore Rural, Kolar, Shimoga, Chikmagalur, Hassan, Mysore, Haveri, and Uttara Kannada, according to the weekly rainfall report from the Directorate of Economics and Statistics, Bangalore. The monsoon was active in some districts in the State during the week. There was excess rainfall in Chitradurga, Davangere, Udupi, Bellary, Bidar, Gulbarga, Raichur and Bijapur. Bangalore Urban, Tumkur, Dakshina Kannada, Kodagu, Koppal and Bagalkot districts recorded normal rainfall, the report said. Of the 175 taluks, 43 taluks received excess rainfall and 36 taluks normal rainfall during the week. In 48, rainfall was deficient, and it was scanty in 43 taluks and there was no rain in five taluks, according to the report.

Property rates revised

Bangalore July 31. The Inspector General and Commissioner of Stamps, C. Krishnappa, has said in a press release that the central valuation committee has revised the market value of immovable properties under the jurisdiction of 12 sub-registrars in the Bangalore Urban district, and the new market rates will come into effect from Monday. The release has said that the public could contact the deputy registration officer, the district registrar or the commissioner's office for any information about the revised market value of the properties.

S.W. Railway General Manager

Bangalore July 31. J.N. Pant, General Manager, Rail Wheel Factory, Bangalore, has taken additional charge as General Manager, South Western Railway. He has taken over from R.N. Aga, who has been appointed Member (Traffic), Railway Board, and ex-officio Secretary, Ministry of Railways. Mr. Pant belongs to the 1966 batch of the Indian Railway Service of Mechanical Engineers.

Train service extended

BANGALORE JULY 31. The Kacheguda-Sri Satya Sai Prashanti Nilayam Express (7603/7604), which was extended to run up to Yeshwantpur till July 31, has been further extended to run till August 31. The last day of service for the train from Kacheguda (7603) is August 31 and that of the train from Yeshwantpur (7604) is September 1. The Yeshwantpur-Salem-Yeshwantpur Passenger Train (574/573) will halt at Belandur Road, Karmelaram, Kelamangalam, Periyanaganthunai, Rayakottai, Marandahalli, Sivadi, Muttampatti, Toppur, Karuvalli and Semmandapatti, in addition to already existing stops, from Sunday. The Yeshwantpur train (574) will leave at 4 p.m. and reach Salem at 9.30 p.m. In the return direction, Train No. 573 will leave Salem at 5.30 a.m. and reach Yeshwantpur at 10.37 a.m.

KPSC examination results

Bangalore July 31. The Karnataka Public Service Commission (KPSC) has notified the provisional list of candidates selected from the competitive examination conducted in March 2004 for seven posts of Chief Librarian, Department of Public Libraries. The notification can be seen on the commission's website, http://kpsc.kar.nic.in.

Irshad Baig given new charge

Bangalore July 31. Mirza Irshad Baig, former MP, has been appointed All-India Congress Committee Secretary in charge of the party affairs in the State. The former Maharashtra Chief Minister, Vilas Rao Deshmukh, is the General Secretary in charge of Karnataka.

`Grant special status for region'

Bangalore July 31. The President of the Hyderabad Karnataka Action Committee, Vishwanath Reddy Mudnal, has urged the Government to seek from the Centre special status for the Hyderabad Karnataka region to ensure its development. He has said that while the Chief Minister, N. Dharam Singh, and the Deputy Chief Minister, Siddaramaiah, have shown interest in developing the region, there is a need was for special status for the region under Article 371 of the Constitution. Belgaum, Bidar, Gulbarga, Raichur and Koppal districts are backward and need attention. He has urged the Chief Minister to include former Minister Vaijnath Patil in the Ministry as Mr. Patil is well-versed with the requirements of the region, according to him.

Man held, goods recovered

TUMKUR JULY 31. One person, whom the police alleged was the leader of a three-member gang of robbers, has been arrested and goods reportedly stolen by the gang in five recent theft cases have been recovered. The Superintendent of Police, B. Sudhakar Hegde, told presspersons that Shivakumar, alias Kumar, was arrested at Chinnasagara village in the district. Mr. Hegde said that on interrogation, it was revealed that the gang had stolen gold and silver jewels from the Lakshminarasimha Swamy Temple at Doddadalavata on July 16. On July 13, the gang stopped a man on the outskirts of Pavagada and robbed him of cash and other valuables. Earlier, Mr. Hegde said the gang was involved in a case of burglary at Veernagamma Temple in Voddagere, and cases of theft at Gundagallu and Koratagere. It had taken away the "hundi'' of a temple at Koratagere town, he added.
