Dharam Singh vows to protect students

MANGALORE, JULY 31. There will be no injustice to students in the seat-sharing pattern, and the Government will take all steps to give them the best deal in higher education, particularly professional college education, the Chief Minister, N. Dharam Singh, here today.

Speaking to the presspersons at the Mangalore airport at Bajpe, near here, Mr. Dharam Singh said that the Government had accepted the Murgod committee report on the fee structure and adopted a seat-sharing ratio of 75:25 to ensure equal opportunities for students from all sections of society. He said private professional colleges were trying to pressure the Government to agree to a 50:50 seat-sharing formula, but it would not give in, he added.

Economic zone

Mr. Dharam Singh said the Government would soon convene a meeting of the stakeholders of the proposed Coastal Special Economic Zone (CSEZ) to decide a site. He would personally monitor the implementation of recommendations made at a meeting of MPs, MLAs, exporters and representatives of chambers of commerce and industry and other stakeholders, he added.

The Chief Minister remarked that he was as eager as anybody else to expand the Ministry, but it could not be done till after the legislature session. After the expansion, the Ministry would be one of the best the State had ever had, he said.

Disposal of rice

Mr. Dharam Singh said he had told the Deputy Commissioner of Dakshina Kannada to dispose of the rice which was seized during raids in connection with the rice diversion racket. The huge stocks of rice were rotting in godowns in Mangalore, he pointed out.

On the committee reportedly constituted to go into the misuse of chemicals that were harmful to health, in various parts of the district, Mr. Dharam Singh said that the Legislative Assembly had been briefed by the Minister for Water Resources and Transport, M. Mallikarjun Kharge. Efforts were being made to assess the situation that had arisen due to the use of the chemicals in cashew plantations. Asked if the Government would decide about the appointment of the Vice-Chancellor to the Kannada University at Hampi, Mr. Dharam Singh said that a committee was expected to submit a report shortly. All decisions pertaining to the university would be taken only after the committee report was tabled, he added.

Mr. Dharam Singh, who arrived here on a scheduled flight with his family, proceeded to Sringeri to visit the Sharada Temple. He stopped over at Moodbidri for an hour.

Team's visit

Our Chikmagalur Correspondent reports:

Mr. Dharam Singh said at Sringeri today that a team of officials would visit the Kudremukh National Park after the session of the Legislative Assembly to study the problems of farmers and tribal people.

Addressing presspersons, he reiterated that people would not be forcibly evicted, and efforts would be made to implement the rehabilitation package only after ascertaining the views of the people of the area. He said that efforts would also be made to make the people aware that naxalites were trying to exploit local problems to their advantage.

Mr. Dharam Singh said he would take a decision on banning the "Shoba Yatra" taken out on the eve of Datta Jayanti in Chikmagalur to avoid a confrontation.
