CHIKMAGALUR, JULY 31. Siddanagouda Patil, secretary of the Communist Party of India (CPI) State unit, has described the Government's move to bring anganwadi centres under the purview of gram panchayats as unscientific. Inaugurating a taluk-level conference of anganwadi workers and assistants at Tarikere on Friday, Mr. Patil, while welcoming the decision of the Government to increase the powers of the panchayats, reiterated that the system needed improvement.
Non-literate
Pointing out that many women panchayat members were non-literate and their husbands were managing the affairs of the panchayats, he questioned the propriety of entrusting the administration of anganwadis to panchayats.
Disinvestment
Stating that the disinvestment policies of the State and Union governments had had an adverse impact on the education and the health sectors, he said it had become difficult for the poor to obtain quality education or health services. Expressing concern over the sense of insecurity among anganwadi workers, Mr. Patil urged the Government to continue the present system of supervising anganwadi centres through the Department of Women and Child Welfare. H.K. Ramachandrappa, president of the Karnataka State Anganwadi Workers' and Assistants' Federation, and Radha Sundaresh, its secretary, spoke.
