By Our Correspondent

CHIKMAGALUR, JULY 31. Satyanarayana, General Manager of Chikmagalur Telecom District, has said that Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd. (BSNL) is making efforts to improve its services.

Mr. Satyanarayana told presspersons here on Friday that arrangements were being made to install five towers for the mobile-phone service in the district. At present, about 10,000 BSNL cell-phone users were being served through 15 towers in the district, he said.

67,096 connections

Pointing out that providing satisfactory telecommunication service in the Malnad region was a difficult task, he said there were 67,096 telephone connections and 150 exchanges in Chikmagalur district. The number of Internet connections would be increased from 910 to 1,400 by the year end, he added.

Mr. Satyanarayana said there were 430 customers for the newly introduced CDMA and WLL mobile services in the district.

Online cash counters for payment of telephone bills had been opened at N.R. Pura and Balehonnur. The service would be extended to Chikmagalur, Kadur, Tarikere, Mudigere, and Sringeri.

Exchanges

Six telephone exchanges had been started in the district at a cost of Rs. 50 lakhs each. In addition to this, C-DOT RSU units had been installed in eight exchanges and the C-DOT 265 exchange in nine places had been upgraded to RSU exchanges at a cost of Rs. 6 lakhs each to improve Internet and ISDN services.

He noted that 74 km of optical fibre cable had been laid during the past two years. Several offices had been shifted to the department's own buildings in an attempt to bring all offices under one roof, he said.

Mr. Satyanarayana disclosed that the capacity of Koppa, Mudigere, and Kadur MAX-XL telephone exchanges would be increased to 3,000 at a cost of Rs. 25 lakhs each. There was a proposal to open a customer service centre at Chikmagalur, he said.
