Poor response to meet on medical literature in Kannada

By Our Special Correspondent

SHIMOGA, JULY 31. The much-publicised three-day State-level conference on medical literature in Kannada opened here on Friday evening at Karnataka Sangha on a dull note with most of the delegates staying away from the event.

The conference, which was to be inaugurated by the Vice-Chancellor of Kuvempu University, K. Chidananda Gowda, was declared open by H.D. Chandrappa Gowda, a noted author of books on medical science in Kannada.

The conference has been organised by the district unit of the Indian Medical Association, the Kannada Vaidya Sahitya Parishat, McGann Hospital, and Karnataka Sangha.

Prasaranga

Dr. Chandrappa Gowda emphasised the need for the Prasarangas of universities, particularly that of the Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences, to popularise medical literature in Kannada by publishing books and holding seminars and discussions on varied topics of medical literature in Kannada.

Dr. Chandrappa Gowda suggested that Kannada newspapers should review books on medical literature so as to keep the common people informed about the latest developments in the medical field.

Noting that it was imperative to popularise medical literature in Kannada, he said it was important to consider medical literature as an important part of scientific literature.

`Atmosphere congenial'

He said the atmosphere for producing literary works on medical sciences in Kannada was congenial as abundant reference books, encyclopaedias, and dictionaries were available. What was required was concerted effort to produce more books in Kannada on medical sciences, he added.

He attributed the paucity of books on medical sciences in Kannada to the reluctance on the part of the publishers in publishing medical books on the pretext that they did not enjoy the reader's support.

K.R. Sridhar, President of the district unit of the Indian Medical Association, presided over the function.

The District Surgeon, Nanda Kothi; Pandurang Udupa, president of the Karnataka Sangh; and Y.V. Shashidhar, vice-president of the IMA Club; were present.

Earlier, K.A. Ashok Pai, former president of the Kannada Vaidya Sahitya Parishat; welcomed the gathering. Keshavamurthy spoke on the occasion.
