`Government must bear fee hike'

By Our Staff Reporter

THRISSUR, JULY 31. The Youth Congress has urged the Government to bear the fee increase proposed by the K.T. Thomas Commission for students in self-financing professional colleges.

Addressing a press conference here on Saturday, the Youth Congress State president, K. P. Anil Kumar, said the Government should come to the rescue of these students. A cell to monitor the problems faced by the students should be constituted. The norms of education loans should be re-examined and made student-friendly.

Mr. Anil Kumar said the Youth Congress would lay siege to self-financing colleges that intended to commercialise education. ``But, unlike those of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) and the Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI), our means of protest will be non-violent,'' he said.

Mr. Anil Kumar condemned the violence unleashed by Left organisations in the State this past week.

``The people of the State are saddened by the suicide of the engineering student, Rajani S. Anand. We need to do everything to prevent such incidents and protect the interests of students. But there is no justification for the Left's reign of terror,'' Mr. Anil Kumar said.

The Youth Congress State general secretary, M. S. Anil Kumar, and the district president, Joseph Taget, were also present at the press meet.
