Vallarpadam: Surjeet plea to Manmohan

By Our Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI, JULY 31. The general secretary of the Communist Party of India (Marxist), Harkishan Singh Surjeet, has urged the Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh, to expedite two infrastructure projects in Kerala -- the construction of the International Container Trans-shipment Terminal at Vallarpadam in Kochi, and the expansion of the Kayamkulam Thermal Project of the National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC) and related LNG terminal project.

In a letter to the Prime Minister, Mr. Surjeet sought his intervention in getting the two projects expedited. He also brought to the Prime Minister's notice the fact that some members of Parliament from Kerala had met him recently with a representation to this effect.

The long-pending Vallarpadam project, in fact, found mention in this year's Budget with the Finance Minister, P. Chidambaram, stating that the Government would facilitate its construction on a Build, Operate and Transfer basis.
