State seeks Rs. 216 cr. for building sea walls

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, JULY 31. Kerala has demanded Rs. 263 crores for coastal and riverbank protection, the Water Resources Minister, T. M. Jacob, has said.

Mr. Jacob, who returned from New Delhi after holding discussions with the Central Government officials and Ministers, said that the State had submitted 23 projects, totalling Rs. 47 crores for a special assistance scheme for riverbank protection.

The State Government has demanded inclusion of Kerala Rivers in the centrally-sponsored critical anti-erosion works for States other than the Ganges programme. Mr. Jacob said that Kerala Rivers were eligible for assistance under the scheme.

With regard to coastal protection, he said that the Centre had cleared the Coastal Protection Project prepared by the State. The initial work would be done in Eriyad beach in Thrissur district for which the Centre had released Rs. 3 crores. He said that the State had demanded Rs. 216 crores as assistance. The Centre had assured the State that it would consider the State's demand. Out of the 560 km coastline in Kerala, 478 km was facing coastal erosion. The State had so far constructed a 386-km sea wall. He said that the State would require Rs. 184 crores for coastal protection work in the remaining 92 km of coastline. Similarly, the State needs to carry out renovation on 60 km sea wall for which Rs. 60 crores would be needed.

The Minister said that the State had got Rs. 50 crores for sea wall construction from the Eleventh Finance Commission. It had constructed a new seawall to the extent of 13 km, besides carrying out repairs to the extent of 26 km.

Mr. Jacob met the Union Ministers, T. R. Balu and J. P. N. Yadav and other officials in the Central Water Resources Department.
