Rally for the blind today

BANGALORE, JULY 31 Over 30 contestants are expected to participate in the Shriram Properties Rally for the Blind to be run in the city on Sunday, coinciding with the Friendship Day celebrations.

It is for the first time that Bangalore will play host to an event of this nature and which will have visually challenged navigators guiding drivers through a 65 kms route.

The National Association for the Blind (Karnataka) will provide its best students to act as navigators to direct the cars through the rally route. Organised by the Level O event management company, the rally has been certified by the Federation of Motorsports Clubs of India (FMSCI).

According to Dr. Saroja Ramachandran, president, National Association for the Blind (Karnataka), the event was part of their activities to integrate the visually challenged persons into mainstream society.

Chief Steward Pramond Kumar said the event, to be run on a Time-Speed-Distance (TSD) format, will start and finish at the Baldwins Boys High School grounds, Hosur Road. The navigators will be supplied with route details in Braille at the start of the rally.

A feature of the event is the participation of Ms. Madhu Singal who will be navigating for Ms. Rekha Das. Ms. Singal heads the NGO, Mitra Jyothi that caters to visually challenged women.

The flag-off will be done by Ms. Saroja Ramachandran, President, NAB-K and Mr. M. P. Rajan, Post Master General (South Karnataka Region). — Our Special Correspondent
