MANGALORE, JULY 31. The Block Congress Committees in Dakshina Kannada district will hold meetings from August 5. These meetings are aimed at preparing the ground for elections to the gram panchayats, the in-charge President of Dakshina Kannada District Congress Committee (DCC), Sadanada Poonja, has said. Mr. Poonja told presspersons here on Thursday that the village-level units of the party had been directed to organise meetings thereafter. The DCC office-bearers had been requested to attend these meetings to guide the office-bearers of these units on organisational matters, he said. Such interaction would stand the party in good stead. About the membership drive conducted by the DCC in accordance with the directive from the All India Congress Committee (AICC), Mr. Poonja said 2.5 lakh members had been enrolled as primary members. This list would be submitted to the KPCC to be forwarded to the AICC. Asked about elections to the DCC, Mr. Poonja said the AICC would release the calendar of events in August for organisational polls in the party. This was mandatory for all parties as per directions of the Election Commission. About sharing power with the Janata Dal (Secular) in boards and corporations in the district, he said the DCC would abide by the KPCC directive in this regard. Mr. Poonja was non-committal on the fracas involving the party's Belthangady Block Committee. He said the matter was sub judice. Efforts would be made to convince the court that it had no locus standi on the issue when the matter came up for hearing before it. He said the question of appointing a block committee president was the party's prerogative. Mr. Poonja regretted the recent incident in which the president of the district unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party, Pratap Simha Nayak, was shooed away from the general meeting of Dakshina Kannada Zilla Panchayat.
