Rs.85.5 lakhs sanctioned to construct classrooms

By Our Special Correspondent

TIRUCHI, JULY 31. In the wake of the Kumbakonam school fire, the district administration has sanctioned Rs. 85.5 lakhs from the `Sarva Sikhsha Abhiyan' to construct 57 buildings for housing classrooms of 21 government schools, which had removed thatched roofs.

The Collector, V. Pandian, told mediapersons here on Friday that all schools in the district had been inspected and 177 thatched roofs identified.

All thatched roofs had been removed immediately and students accommodated in available classrooms in a majority of schools.

However, six government higher secondary schools at Vaiyampatti, Tuvarankurichi, Poigaipatti, Pappampatti, Kattur Pappkurichi and Kannanur (the last four run by the Adi Dravida Welfare Department), eight government high schools at Vallanadu, Sevalpatti, Puthanatham, Uthukuli, Marungapuri, Thuvarankurichi, Ayyampalayam and Amanakkampatti and seven panchayat union elementary and middle schools were in need of concrete buildings.

Mr. Pandian said that out of 1,362 Integrated Child Development Scheme Centres in the district, 111 were functioning under thatched roofs. While 75 centres had been given permanent accommodation, steps were taken to construct structures for the rest.

The Public Works Department (buildings wing) has started inspecting school buildings in the district to issue stability certificates.

The Education Department found during a recent survey that of 261 private nursery schools in the district, 131 did not have government recognition. Fifty teaching posts in government high and higher secondary schools, and 396 posts in elementary schools were vacant and the Government has initiated steps to fill them.

Mr. Pandian said the Government had sanctioned Rs. 15.54 lakhs to renovate the noon meal centres. Steps had been taken to construct permanent structures for eight centres functioning under thatched roofs in government schools. Kitchens of 85 centres functioning in the open would be shifted to temporary safe structures.
