Tiruchi
By Our Staff Reporter
TIRUCHI, JULY 31. The city and the rural district police have jointly evolved an action plan to curb the activities of rowdy elements in Tiruchi district. Eleven special task forces have been formed to crack down on rowdy elements. Disclosing this at a press conference here today, the City Police Commissioner, T. P. Sundaramoorthy stated that a special monitoring cell has been set up under an Assistant Commissioner to coordinate the functions of special task forces. The cell would function round the clock and the public could pass on any information regarding rowdy elements or other criminal activities over the telephone numbers: 94430-15306 or 2423549. The forces would initiate immediate action and the identity of the complainants would be kept confidential. Ten of the task forces would function under the supervision of the Deputy Commissioner of Police (law and order) while another task force of the city crime branch would operate under the direct supervision of the City Police Commissioner. The forces would launch a crackdown on rowdy elements and initiate action against usurers, gambling dens, katta panchayats, immoral traffic of women and pimps. The police have prepared a list of rowdy elements and classified them into three categories depending on their crime record and current behaviour. About 60 of them have arrested and booked in various cases. This included a few notorious rowdies and 22 repeat offenders, including four pimps, have been booked under the Goondas Act so far.
`False' allegation
On a recent complaint from Rahmatunissa (19) who alleged that her mother and brother forced her into prostitution, he said the Woraiyur police have registered a case and 10 accused including the mother and son have been arrested. The Tiruchi Legal Aid Centre had also filed a complaint on behalf of the girl alleging that two cine directors had raped her. However, investigations revealed that the allegation against one of the directors was unsubstantiated. The details regarding the place, date and time of the incident provided in the complaint have been found to be incorrect on verification. A probe was on to find why the girl had made the `false' allegation and the motive behind it. The team probing the incident would soon take up investigations at Chennai where the other director was said to have raped her. Departmental action has been initiated against the Inspector of the Anti-Vice Squad for failing to act on the complaint immediately. Answering a query on recent crimes in the city, Mr.Sundaramoorthy maintained that the crime rate has come down in the city in comparison to previous years. Of 287 cases registered so far this year, 237 have been detected. Over 340 cases were registered during the corresponding period last year, he said. However, the police have intensified night patrolling to check crimes and four teams have been formed to pursue criminal cases. He said that the police would launch a crackdown against autorickshaws for overloading the vehicles with school children.
