KOCHI, JULY 31. Members of the Ernakulam District Private Bus Operators' Association will stage a dharna in front of the Kanayanoor Taluk Office on Monday, to protest against the `insensitivity' of the State Government to their demands. The association president, M Khalid Mundapilly said that the Government was dilly-dallying on the issue of fare hike. It was trying to prove that the bus fare in other States was lesser. The situation in other States is much different than in Kerala. There is a welfare board for employees of private buses in the State and the owners have to set apart 13 per cent of the wages for this. The employees are paid comparatively higher wages than in other States. Vehicle tax is very high in Kerala and private buses remit Rs. 100 crores every quarter as tax. The permit fees and penalties too are very high in the State, he said. Both the Government and the sub-committee, of which the Transport Minister is the chairman, have `ignored' these aspects, said Mr. Mundapilly.
