Wakf Board chief fumes at MIM demand for ouster

By Our Staff Reporter

HYDERABAD, JULY 31. The Chairman of the Andhra Pradesh State Wakf Board, Mohd. Saleem, has described the Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen's (MIM) demand for his ouster from the Board as one aimed at taking control of the body. Addressing a press meet here on Saturday, Mr. Saleem said he would not be "cowed down" by the MIM's pressure tactics and dared the State Government to dissolve the body if it wanted to remove him. "There will be no hesitation about quitting if the entire Board is dissolved, but I will not accept it if they are selective and try to remove me or certain other members," he said.

`Good work ignored'

Stating that he had introduced several welfare schemes after taking over as Chairman, Mr. Saleem said his initiatives had not been appreciated by a section, which, he said, wanted to project itself as the "sole custodian" of the community. He alleged that his detractors looked upon him as a hindrance and were desperate to get him removed. He said they wanted to take control of the body and their motives were "selfish."

GTB issue

On the Wakf Board depositing its money with the Global Trust Bank (GTB), Mr. Saleem said he had merely renewed the deposits made by his predecessors. The decision was taken in accordance with Government orders issued in October 2002 and a resolution passed earlier by the Board, he said, adding that the Board had deposited Rs. 22 crores with different banks, including Rs. 3 with the GTB. Listing out initiatives undertaken during his tenure, like providing pensions for widows and clearing encroachments from Wakf properties, he said the Board would soon introduce mobile clinics in slums.
