This Day That Age
The Government of India have warned Portugal that if force was used against peaceful and non-violent satyagrahis in the Portuguese possessions as has been threatened, there will be incalculable repercussions among the people of India as a whole. This warning was conveyed in a note handed over by the Ministry of External Affairs to the Portuguese Charge d'Affaires in New Delhi. The note points out that the Portuguese attempt to confuse world opinion by putting the blame on India for the natural consequences was a misguided policy and repression of nationalist and patriotic elements in favour of India will not deceive any one. The undeniable fact which the Portuguese Government refused to face is that there is a massive movement for freedom and reunion with India among the people of Goa which systematic and deliberate repression by the Portuguese authorities has failed to suppress. The Government of India have noted the Portuguese declaration to "resist by force" any form of peaceful and non-violent satyagraha that the people of Goa may launch to achieve freedom from Portuguese colonial rule. The Government of India are content to leave this expression of the Portuguese intention for world opinion to judge.
