Coordination panel to be finalised soon

By Our Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI, AUG. 1. The Communist Party of India (Marxist) today said that a formal announcement about the members of the coordination committee between the United Progressive Alliance and the four supporting Left parties could be made tomorrow.

The decision to have the formal mechanism was agreed after a meeting the veteran Marxist leader, Jyoti Basu, and the party Polit Bureau member, Sitaram Yechury, had with the Congress president and UPA chairperson, Sonia Gandhi, on Saturday.

The Polit Bureau member, Prakash Karat, said that the Left parties — the CPI(M), CPI, All India Forward Bloc and the Revolutionary Socialist Party — have already submitted the names of their nominees.

Besides the Left nominees, the panel would include Ms. Gandhi and the Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh, with the latter having the option of inviting Minister/Ministers to a meeting of the panel, depending on the agenda.

The idea was to make the panel a formal vehicle of interaction between the Left parties, the UPA and its Government. The Left parties were not in favour of being part of any committee that would essentially have been an engagement with the Congress representatives alone. With this consideration in mind, the Left parties had suggested that representatives of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, the Rashtriya Janata Dal and the Nationalist Congress Party be part of the committee. However, the Congress expressed reservation that it may not be possible to have representatives of just three UPA constituents and leave others out.

Sources in the Congress said the party was likely to forward the names of its representatives to the committee in due course and that would be followed by a formal meeting of the new panel.
