Mohun Bagan defeats Sporting

KOLKATA, AUG. 1. Former champion Mohun Bagan consolidated its position on top of the league table, defeating Mohammedan Sporting 3-0 in a Calcutta Football League Super division encounter here on Sunday.

The team's best victory margin of the season was made possible by Ashim Biswas (14th minute), Mehrajuddin (53rd) and Sunil Chhetri (65th). Mohammedan Sporting — relegated from the National Football League's elite division last season — struggled to organise its outfit in the new season and Bagan made the most of the chaos in the opponent ranks.

The win helped Bagan tally 17 points with five wins and two draws. Sporting remained at the bottom of the table with just three points it gained from one win and lost the other four matches. The successful show against Sporting will come in handy for Mohun Bagan, which is scheduled to leave for Myanmar on Monday following an invitation to play three matches against the host's national team, which is preparing for the LG Cup scheduled for later this month. — Our Sports Reporter
