Money against merit

Sir, — This refers to the editorial, `Money against merit' (July 31). Kerala's education system is now a mess. The entire system was almost paralysed when the Government declared a holiday for a week. Even otherwise strikes and hartals disrupt classes every now and then. This is the state of affairs in a State that boasts of the highest literacy rate in the country! Our leaders should put their heads together and find a pragmatic solution to the problem.

Hridya S. Sekhar,
Thiruvananthapuram

Sir, — Earlier, education was seen as an agent of social uplift. Now, in Kerala, it has turned into an instrument of discrimination in the hands of the elite of society.

Boby Mathew,
New Delhi
