Ceremonial send-offs

Sir, — This refers to the editorial, `Ceremonial send-offs' (Aug. 2). Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has set a new trend in simplicity, not evident for the past two decades. Ceremonial send-offs are unnecessary. Similarly, the practice of various officials arriving to receive or send off Ministers during their visits to States can also be avoided.

Sir, — In fact this legacy of the British era should be dispensed with. Our President too has reportedly instructed that his motorcade should not obstruct traffic in New Delhi.

Sir, — Dr. Singh has proved to be a man of high-thinking and simple living. Power has not corrupted him. This humble attitude is exemplary.

Sir, — I fail to understand the reason for the praise being showered on Dr. Singh for his decision to stop ceremonial send-offs. He is not the first to express his displeasure against the practice.

V. Krishnakumar,
New Delhi
