VISAKHAPATNAM, AUG. 2. The diesel price hike has struck a debilitating blow to the mechanised fishing sector in the State, the Visakha Dolphin Boat Operators' Welfare Association has said. According to the association, the latest hike comes at a time when nearly half the mechanised fishing boat fleet was anchored at the harbour under the impact of high operational costs. The general secretary of the association, Ch. Satyanarayana Murthy, said that each mechanised vessel consumed about 200 litres of diesel a day during the fishing season and that the hike imposed an additional financial burden of nearly Rs.27 crores on the 1,800 mechanised boats operating off the coast of the State.
