Call to amend Tobacco Board Act

GUNTUR, AUG. 1. The Tobacco Board Act needs to be amended to annul the judgment of the Supreme Court bench giving overriding powers to the individual State Governments to make law with regard to the marketing of the flue-cured Virginia tobacco, the board Chairman, P. Dayachari, said on Monday.

By giving the State Government power to enact law with regard to marketing, there was a danger to the interests of the tobacco farmers in the same or other States, as the trade might prefer to buy directly from some farmers.

`Ruling discriminatory'

Terming the January 24, 2002, Supreme Court judgment as discriminatory against the farmers, he said that the Board would also lose control over the production though theoretically it would fix the crop size.
