NELLORE, AUG. 2. The District Collector, B. Rajsekhar, on Monday stressed the need to devise a marketing strategy in tune with changing times and tastes of customers, to promote the handloom sector. Inaugurating a 10-day handloom exhibition-cum-sale `Cheneta Ragaalu' (Melodies of Handloom) at Indira Bhavan, here, he emphasised the need for quality and pointed out the rapid change in people's styles. He reminded the gathering how cotton dress material had again established its prominence, compared to earlier years, when other dress materials were in vogue.
Khadi in demand
Referring to the growing trends in the present day market, Mr. Rajsekhar, pointed to the sea change in khadi sector where a lot of marketing and advertising had been on to launch the product, keeping modern style of living in mind.
Expert help
He assured the handloom sector in the district to provide proper marketing and training and to ensure availability of latest trends in design by bringing in experts from the National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT). He expressed happiness that more than 45 stalls from different parts of State were exhibiting their range of products at the exhibition. He promised to convene a tri-monthly meeting with all those connected with handloom weaving sector in the district. The Deputy Director, Weavers' Service Centre, Vijayawada, Sunderlal, said the Central Government was taking steps to protect and encourage the handloom sector. The Assistant Director, Handloom and Textiles, Nellore, Jagjivan, the Director, APCO, Guravaiah, and others spoke.
