SINGAPORE, AUG. 2. The former Chief of the Naval Staff, Admiral L. Ramdas, has been awarded this year's Ramon Magsaysay Award for Peace and International Understanding, along with the Pakistani journalist, Ibn Abdur Rehman. Both Admiral Ramdas and Mr. Rehman, former editor of the Pakistan Times, are co-chairmen of the Pakistan-India People's Forum for Peace and Democracy formed in September 1994. The citation read: "In electing Laxminarayan Ramdas and Ibn Abdur Rehman to receive the 2004 Ramon Magsaysay Award for Peace and International Understanding, it [the award] recognises their reaching across a hostile border to nurture a citizen-based consensus for peace between India and Pakistan." The Forum's chief weapon was dialogue, the citation said, and through a series of joint conventions beginning in 1995, the organisation had drawn hundreds of Indians and Pakistanis together to promote demilitarisation, denuclearisation and peace.
