BANGALORE, AUG 2. Sports Hostel, Bangalore annexed the State `B' Division basketball league title. At the Sree Kanteerava stadium outdoor courts here on Monday, the Hostelites had to come from behind to score a 70-63 win over Sports Authority of India (SAI), Dharwad.
Lively proceedings
The match had its moments of fluency and fortitude. Sports Hostel coach A.Y. Anoop deftly used his resources despite the loss of `key player' Sriraksha with about six minutes left for the final whistle with five fouls. Brijesh Patel who came in for Srirakhs used his physical frame quite effectively under the defensive board and with Raghavendra taking over the role of a ball handler and scorer, the Hostel boys made light of a 53-57 score at the end of third quarter to pull off a dramatic win. With Sriraksha and Raghavendra starting off well, the Bangalore team took off in style but stuttered and stopped under the onslaught that Ashok Bandha and Devakumar unleashed with a spree of baskets for SAI. In fact, but for the early hiccups its was the Dharwad boys who led at the end of each quarter before succumbing at the end. M. Adithya, who chipped in well with timely shots early in the fourth quarter probably had a big say in the Dharwad side's fortunes as Deva Kumar and Naresh lacked support in the defence and committed too many needless fouls towards the end. Both Sports Hostel and SAI however earned promotion to the A division next year. Bangalore Sporting which conceded walk-overs in the relegation stage, along with BPL (which failed to field a team) will be relegated to `C' division.
