Bus falls into stream, four die

Chikmagalur Aug. 2. Four persons died, three of them on the spot, when the driver of the private bus by which they were travelling lost control over the vehicle while trying to avoid an autorickshaw near Macheri, six km from Kadur, and it fell into the Kunti stream on Monday. One person died in hospital. Around 80 persons were injured, 22 of them seriously. The condition of three of the injured is said to be serious. The dead have been identified as Hemantha (22), Achar (30), Prakash (35), and Mallappa (55). The seriously injured have been admitted to hospitals in Davangere, Shimoga, and Bangalore. The bus, which was going to Belagur from Kadur, was the last service on that route. More than 100 people travelling in the bus were returning home after the weekly market at Kadur. Fire service personnel and members of some voluntary organisations assisted in the rescue operation.

Notices on Chamarajpet poll

BANGALORE AUG. 2. The Karnataka High Court today ordered issue of notice to the former Chief Minister, S.M. Krishna, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) State unit President, H.N. Ananth Kumar, and film actor `Mukhyamantri' Chandru on a petition to set aside the election of Mr. Krishna from the Chamarajpet Assembly Constituency. In the petition, Pramila Nesargi said that in the election held on April 20, she was among the eight candidates. She and Mr. Chandru had filed the nomination papers as BJP candidates against Mr. Krishna. She had filed her papers on March 31 and produced Forms A and B before 3 p.m. Mr. Chandru, she said, had filed the papers at 2.52 p.m. the same day. The Returning Officer passed orders on April 5 rejecting her nomination. She said the rejection of her nomination was improper and prayed for setting aside the election. The court adjourned the case to September 7.

Bhalki poll: Justice V.G. Sabhahit ordered issue of notice on a petition to set aside the election of the BJP's Prakash Khandre from Bhalki Assembly Constituency. In the petition, Ishwar Khandre (Congress) said Mr. Prakash, as part of the election campaign, had distributed pamphlets which tarnished his image. The court adjourned the case to August 30.

Cases to be re-examined

BANGALORE AUG. 2. The Minister for Water Resources and Transport, M. Mallikarjun Kharge, told the Legislative Council on Monday that the Government would re-examine the pending cases against IAS and IPS officers in the State. Replying to a question from Basavaraj Bommai of the Janata Dal (United) during Question Hour, Mr. Kharge said that the Government had initiated "disciplinary proceedings" against eight IAS officers and one IPS officer. Departmental inquiries against five officers had been completed and recommendations made to the Union Government to impose penalties. Departmental inquiries against four officers were in different stages. However, no final orders had been issued either imposing penalty or exonerating them, he clarified.

Plea to amend Article 371

Bangalore Aug. 2. Representatives of the Hyderabad Karnataka Area Horata Samithi, under the leadership of the former Minister and Janata Dal (Secular) MLA, Vaijanath Patil, called on the Union Home Minister, Shivraj Patil here recently, and requested him to amend Article 371 of the Constitution to create special provisions for the districts in the Hyderabad-Karnatak region. The Union Home Minister, who was on a visit to Bangalore, reportedly promised to look into the matter. A memorandum was submitted to Mr. Shivraj Patil by nearly 20 legislators of the region.

Mr. Vaijanath Patil told The Hindu that the State Government had submitted a detailed proposal to the Centre seeking an amendment to Article 371 by virtue of which there could be regional recruitments and admissions to educational institutions on regional basis.

Protest

DAVANGERE AUG. 2. Bajrang Dal activists took out a procession in the city today protesting against the five per cent reservation for minorities in Andhra Pradesh. The agitators burnt an effigy of the Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister, Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy.

S. Manjunath, leader of the Bajrang Dal's district unit, questioned the propriety of discriminating against people on caste or religious lines and alleged that the reservation was introduced to woo the minorities. He said that in order to treat all citizens of the country equally, the previous Union Government had thought of bringing in a Uniform Civil Code. He also said that such reservation policies might create unrest among the people of other communities.

Raid

DAVANGERE AUG. 2. The Jagalur police raided the premises of the Karnataka Government Employees' Association and arrested 19 persons, including some who were allegedly playing "andar-bahar."

The police also seized Rs. 5,750 in cash, a few gold rings, and three motorcycles. The arrested have been remanded in judicial custody till August 16.

Suicide

Bidar Aug. 2. A woman committed suicide here on Sunday by hanging herself from the roof at her husband's house.

Umavati (26) was married to Sharanappa Halladkeri, a final year LLB student on May 16. A dowry of Rs. 2 lakhs and 60 grams of gold was given to the groom, her father Sham Rao of Borgi village said.

He said that Umavati came back to his house many times when her husband and in-laws demanded that a car also be given as dowry. But Sham Rao said that he could not afford to fulfil this demand.

Unable to bear the mental torture, Umavati committed suicide, Mr. Rao said in his complaint. A case has been registered in the Market Police Station.

Welding course

Mysore Aug. 2. The Advanced Welding Training Centre here will conduct a skill upgradation programme in advanced TIG welding. The programme is supported by the AICTE, New Delhi, and is open to professional welders to get trained in the fast changing and evolving field of welding technology. The course will be held on August 19 and 20 and industries and participants interested in the programme may contact the Chief Executive or the Project Officer, Nodal Centre for EMD, SJCE campus, Mysore 570 006 (ph: 2515845).

Disqualified

BELLARY AUG. 2. H.M. Veerbhadraswamy, joint registrar of Cooperative Societies (Gulbarga region), Raichur, has disqualified J. Gopinath, president of the Janata Bazaar, from holding the office of president and member of the Executive Committee of the institution for two years. Mr. Veerabhadraswamy passed an order to this effect on July 26 after verifying the allegations of irregularities made against Mr. Gopinath.

MANGALORE AUG. 2. The State Government has permitted the Sarosh Institute of Hotel Administration, a unit of Nitte Education Trust, at Pumpwell in the city, to increase its intake for Bachelor of Hotel Management course to 90 students for 2004-2005, a release said.

The government passed an order to this effect on July 29, 2004. Details could be had over phone 2245140.

Applications

CHAMARAJANAGAR Aug. 2. The District Industries Centre, Chamarajanagar, has invited applications from entrepreneurs, merchants, and progressive farmers who are interested in setting up agri-based industries to register their name along with complete address to encourage them to set up small-scale industries in the district. The District Industries Centre has requested such applicants to furnish details of the small-scale industries unit intended to be set up in the industrial area. Disruption

Bidar Aug. 2. The Gulbarga Electric Supply Company has said that disruptions in power supply will continue across the district for the next three to four months as major maintenance and extension work under the Accelerated Power Development Programme had been taken up in Bidar.

Transformers needed to be shut down for the extension work, a press release said.

This was bound to cause a disruption in power supply.

Once the extension work was over, power supply would be regular and continuous.

Consumers are requested to cooperate, the release from the GESCOM Executive Engineer (Distribution) said.
