Rs.3.15 crores to construct hostels for SC students

TIRUCHI, AUG. 2. The State Government has sanctioned Rs. 3.15 crores to construct own buildings for housing 10 Adi Dravida students' hostels in the district during the current year.

The Collector, V. Pandian, told presspersons that new buildings have been planned for Adi Dravida students at Thuvarankurichi, Sirunavalur, M. R. Palayam, Kallakkudi, Kattur Pappakurichi, Srirangam, Thottiyam, Mannachanallur, Thulaiyanatham and Kattuputhur. The sites have been identified and the works have been entrusted to the Tamil Nadu Adidravida Housing Development Corporation (THADCO).

He said a sum of Rs. 8.08 crores was disbursed as educational scholarships to 70,302 boys and girls belonging to Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes and converted Christians.

The Government during the current year distributed notebooks to 61,975 SC and ST boys and girls studying in standards from IV to X in 634 schools in the district and textbooks to 15,000 students in standards IX and X. Besides, all 21,771 students of 119 schools run by the Adi Dravida and Scheduled Tribes Welfare Department were provided with textbooks and notebooks.

PHCs upgraded

Earlier, two upgraded primary health centres (PHCs) were functioning at Puthanatham and Puthur Uthamanur. The Government extended this scheme and Uppliyapuram PHC was upgraded in 2001-02 and the Kuzhamani and Vaiyampatti PHCs were upgraded last year. To create 30-bed facility, x-ray, scan and ECG units, the government had spent about Rs.1 crore for each PHC.

In association with the World Health Organisation, the government was implementing a special programme for total eradication of elephantiasis in 13 districts in the State, including Tiruchi district. September 4 would be observed as Anti-Elephantiasis Day, when the general health department staff would visit households in both urban and rural areas to distribute tablets. The district administration was taking steps to distribute tablets to 23 lakh people excluding pregnant women and children below two years.

The Horticulture Department under its integrated horticulture development project has planned during the current year to plant tissue culture banana saplings, hybrid vegetable seeds and high yielding vegetable seeds to cover 88 hectares and has earmarked Rs. 8.55 lakhs for the same. The farmers would be given 50 per cent subsidy.

Under the integrated tribal development programme, 100 tribal families in Pachamalai hill station would get fruit crops, hybrid vegetable seeds. They would get assistance for purchase of oil engine, plant protection kits and micro-irrigation equipments. Another 100 tribal farmers would be imparted training on horticultural cultivation for which Rs. 3.28 lakhs would be spent.

Under the vegetable development programme, a special subsidy of 25 per cent would be given to boost productivity of vegetables and hybrid varieties. Training would be imparted to farmers. A sum of Rs. 3.9 lakhs would be released as subsidy during the current financial year, Mr. Pandian added.

For promoting the cultivation of medicinal plants and to enhance profitability of farmers, 12 hectares would be brought under medicinal plant cultivation and the Government has released Rs. 50,000 for training farmers.
