`Spastic children need greater attention'

TIRUCHI, AUG 2. Speakers at the celebrations of the 22nd anniversary of the Spastics Society of Tiruchi stressed the need for greater co-operation among parents and trainers of spastic children for carrying out the specially designed treatment procedures.

S.J. Nehru, Dean (in charge), K.A.P. Viswanatham Government Medical College, explained the causes of cerebral palsy and stressed the need to maintain a holistic approach to its treatment.

John Peter, secretary, Tiruchi Multi-purpose Social and Service Society (TMSSS), said spastic children required greater attention of their parents, whose role was vital in proper implementation of the various training programmes devised for such children.

S. Dhanraj, Director, Sharan, an organisation involved in social activities, pointed to the need for screening babies soon after birth to detect disabilities.

the project manager of the society, C. Shanthakumar, called for an interdisciplinary approach to training children affected with cerebral palsy. He called for clubbing together various schemes for the disabled.

The Spastic Society, started in 1982, functions as a day-care centre providing training for 90 children aged 6-20, from Tiruchi and surrounding areas. Occupational and speech therapies are part of the training for the mentally retarded children.

Malathi, mother of a spastic child, shared her experiences in bringing up a spastic child with the audience and exhorted the parents to follow the instructions given at the training. Aravind, a spastic child recited `Tirukkural' couplets.

K. Revathi, special educator of the centre, and J. Jayachitra, a physiotherapist, spoke.
