Rise in humidity

The Gannavaram airport recorded a maximum temperature of 26.6 degrees Celsius and a minimum of 23.2 degrees Celsius on Monday. Humidity, which was 96 per cent in the morning, increased to 98 per cent in the evening. Rainfall of 16.8 mm at night and 10.2 mm during the day was also recorded.

Commodity prices

Following were the prices (in rupees per kg) of essential commodities in local wholesale markets on Monday, according to the Vijayawada Chamber of Commerce and Industry: groundnut oil - Rs. 53.50, palmolein oil - Rs. 46, sunflower oil - Rs. 53.50, tamarind (flower variety) - Rs. 31 to 35, tamarind (karipuli variety) - Rs. 40 to 45, chillies (AC) - Rs. 24 to 28, chillies (non-AC) - Rs. 14 to 18, rice (2716) - Rs. 13, rice superfine (samba masoori) - Rs. 14 to 15, rice (sona masoori) - Rs. 15 to 16, black gram - Rs. 19 to 25, red gram - Rs. 28.50 to 34.

Power shutdown

Power will be shut down from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. in some areas falling under the Suryaraopet section to facilitate the shifting of electricity poles. The areas affected would be part of Eluru Road from Chuttugunta centre to SRR college, Masjid street, Mayor street, Kakatiya College surroundings, Goginenivari street, Milkbooth street, Bhagathsingh Road, SRR college surroundings, DBK street and BSNL office.

LIC Wage settlement

The Machilipatnam division of the Insurance Employees Union has demanded that the Central Government take steps to ensure wage settlement to employees of the LIC and GIC, besides withdrawing its decision to increase the FDI cap on the insurance sector from 25 per cent to 49 per cent. The union regretted that the wage settlement, due from August 2002, had remained unresolved.

Awards for top

SSC students

The Viswasai Cultural Association has decided to give merit awards to 100 students in the district who topped in the recent SSC exams. Students who secured aggregates of more than 85 per cent are eligible to apply. Students may send their applications, a copy of their marks memos and envelopes affixed with stamps to the Association's office at 6-1-113/24, Padmaraonagar, Secunderabad - 500 025. The date and venue of the presentation will be communicated to students. The last date for submitting the applications is Aug 12.

Free training camp

To mark Friendship Day, the Sri Sivani Training Institute is organizing a two-day free training camp on the preparation of bakery items. The president of the Lions Club, Vanita, Sheela, inaugurated the camp at the institute's premises at Benz circle on Monday. The ex-governor of the Lions Club, T. Durga Malleswara Rao, who attended, appreciated the efforts of the institute to provide self-employment opportunities. The director of the Setwin, K. Vijayalakshmi, presided.
