NEW DELHI, AUG. 2. A 23-year-old man allegedly tried to commit suicide outside the Supreme Court here by setting himself afire after his petition in connection with corruption was rejected today. He was, however, prevented by the police. According to the police, a man was spotted trying to set fire to his trousers outside the Supreme Court complex around 2-15 p.m. A couple of policemen standing nearby prevented him from doing so and snatched the matchbox from him. During interrogation, the young man, identified as Sunil Kumar, a resident of Hazaribagh in Jharkhand, told the police that he had submitted a petition in the court which pertained to rampant corruption in the country. The petition was rejected today following which he decided to take the extreme step. A case under Section 309 (attempt to commit suicide) of the Indian Penal Code has been registered at Tilak Marg police station and Sunil has been arrested. Further investigations in the case are on.
