DHAKA: UNICEF has made an international appeal for raising $13.4 millions in emergency aid to save the lives of the flood-affected people in Bangladesh. The emergency appeal was made on Monday to address the immediate needs of the victims. UNICEF's donor alert report and its accompanying appeal were aimed at saving children from the rising tide of water-borne diseases and acute respiratory infection, providing nutritious food and creating learning spaces for them in the worst affected areas. It said funds were urgently needed to expand UNICEF's interventions to help alleviate the sufferings of flood-affected children and women. The worst floods in 15 years have killed 660 people, made over 10 million homeless and affected another 20 million in 43 of the 64 Bangladesh districts. As flood waters continued to recede, health officials said diseases were spreading because of a shortage of water purification tablets. Victims in 5,000 shelters were facing shortages of food and clean water while the floods damaged 27,000 schools, according to media and aid officials.
